Q.2.2007 OUT & ABOUT: INDUSTRY

Reflections at the End of a Cycle

"Perhaps this is fatalistic of me to consider, but I notice that many of my Out & About shoots tend to attract my attention toward those things at the end of their life cycle," muses LeFever when asked why so many shots of empty streets, abandoned buildings, rusted constructions, "I am fascinated by the law of entropy." On his recent trip to San Francisco, LeFever turned his camera once again to places of industry. Industry is another fascination with LeFever and one that he says, "... is alluring to consider human industry, especially on scale, like a hive of bees or colony of ants."

LeFever notes that the industry as an expense of energy and endeavor to meet a particular goal or need, is what keeps entropy at bay. For this reason it is fascinating to see that pouring of labor or technological resource, that feeds and clothes people, gives them purpose, keeps them occupied, delivers a pay check, allows socialization and commodity...

Equally as fascinating is the corrosion that occurs when this energy is no longer maintained for lack of need, loss of funding, outdated utility, disinterest. .
