Q.2.2007 OUT & ABOUT: ROAD TRIP
HEARST CASTLE / ALCATRAZ

Institutions of Interesting Consideration

Similar Qualities at opposite ends of freedom. Hearst Castle and Alcatraz. Reform and Opulent Addiction... Two Grand Constructions, one made from the dream of a single man the other a place where many men reflected on different paths and dreamt of new lives. Both constructions have many rooms for many guests. One where men and women were invited to mingle and enjoy, one where men were sentenced to endure. Both have beautiful views. Both were self sustaining, with water and power - independent from the outside world...

Both with rules of engagement and conduct, limited boundaries and behavioral expectations. Both with libraries available to the guests, and spacious dining room where all the meals are served at specific times. One where the elite of society were privileged to network, and the other where the dirge of society were contained and networked to survive...

The photos above are brief shots from outdoors of Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. The photo at right and those below below are a few shots from the tour at Alcatraz, in San Francisco California.

Both built with thick stone walls. One celebrating the spirit of humanity with the finest collectable art, the other containing the darkness of the human spirit in a collection of lost souls. Both cost much to build and great amounts to maintain. At Hearst Castle guests had the freedom to swim in pools one only dreamt about while on Alcatraz, men dreamt of swimming the Bay to their freedom...

Though no one was ever isolated in the Castle, they would be asked to leave upon breaking house rules: never invited to return, banished to the general population being isolated from the great prestige and opportunity of a Hearst social event. On the Rock, when one broke the rules he was thrown into an isolation so dark to be disoriented of time and space, awaiting by the unknown second to be invited back into general population.
